Employee onboarding is one of the most crucial parts of the employee lifecycle. The employee has already made some type of impression that eventually led to a job offer, but now comes the time where the company must retain their new employee by showcasing their company, the culture and the different facets of the business. The employee onboarding experience can be delivered in many different ways by several different techniques. While every company onboards employees differently, it’s important to not only capture the attention of your new hire but use this experience as one that will retain them for years to come. First impressions matter, in fact, 28% of employees said that they left their job within the first 90 days of starting due to an unsatisfactory onboarding process.

While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all to the employee onboarding experience, there are trends across various industries that have a strong correlation to a happier and more productive workplace with minimal turnover. Whether you’re building out your program for the first time or looking to be inspired, here are the facts and figures behind the current state of employee onboarding.

Employee #onboarding is a critical part of any employee’s lifecycle. @ClearCompany is here to tell you about the current state of employee onboarding and what’s working.

Methods for Employee Onboarding

There are many ways that companies can deliver employee onboarding. From learning platforms to videos to a more individualized approach, there is one method that stands out amongst the rest. To no surprise, hands-on experience inside your employee onboarding practices is used by over 54% of companies surveyed, with computer-based at 40% and videos coming in at 38% respectively. While hands-on practice might dominate the format of employee onboarding, 40% surveyed reported that training took place offline, 27% online and 33% had a blended experience. Those numbers vary depending on the company's size with 48% of large companies having an online experience.

Employee Onboarding and the Key Focus Areas

At the top of the list is mandatory compliance training which includes items like health & safety training and fire awareness. While over half of companies (53%) provide mandatory compliance training, understanding processes, procedures and business practices come in second at 46%, followed by more technical skill development in third with 41%. At the bottom of the list, 36% of employees surveyed state that the technology and tools that they’ll be using aren’t involved in the onboarding experience. This is most likely due to the fact that many different employees from various departments are involved in group onboarding, so tools aren’t as relevant during employee onboarding.

Addressing Top Challenges on Employee Onboarding

Learning the expectation of the supervisor is the top concern facing employees when it pertains to onboarding training. The simple solution to this issue is to make sure that employees have a conversation with their direct supervisor within the first week of orientation that helps them understand the different expectations and goals that their supervisor has set.

Learning to do the job is the second top concern facing employees. This concern is alleviated over time, but making sure that your onboarding experience is long enough for employees to fully grasp their duties and responsibilities will help eradicate this concern. Feeling uncertain about the ability to perform well and figuring out where to go for information is a third top concern for employee onboarding. Feeling uncertain is solved over time, and by making sure employees are taught the correct processes for the tasks they perform, employees won’t have any doubts on how to do their job.

The Aberdeen Group reported that 66% of companies with onboarding programs claimed a higher rate of successful assimilation of new hires into company culture, 62% had higher time-to-productivity ratios and 54% reported higher employee engagement. Employee onboarding and the structure your company chooses to have for your new hires can be performed in many ways, but at the end of the day, the onboarding experience should not be taken lightly.
